Research That Supports ‘Mindfulness’ As Treatment for Tinnitus
It has long been understood that lowering stress and actively relaxing are things which can help alleviate tinnitus, but mindfulness—focusing on the present while accepting feelings and sensations—has not been one of the usually recommended things to do. However, a recent study has put mindfulness to the forefront of tinnitus treatment options.
In this study, the researchers worked with 182 adults who suffered from severe tinnitus over the course of 8 weeks. Using Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), the study participants found their tinnitus-related distress was lowered by 50%, and the psychological strain was reduced by 41.2%. With the impressive successfulness of this study, other researchers are looking to test others with tinnitus to see if MBCT is another truly viable tinnitus treatment option.
