Some people receive their hearing aids and expect that they will instantly have their hearing back to what it was before their hearing loss. However, this is not the case. While hearing aids are excellent devices, it takes times to rehabilitate your hearing to become accustomed to interpreting sounds from your hearing aids.
Hearing Loss Creates A Disconnect
Hearing loss is generally a slow process, which is why many people don’t realize they have a problem with hearing loss until it has progressed significantly. The longer the hearing loss goes untreated, the more of a disconnect sounds have from the brain.
This is due in part to the auditory nerve becoming damaged by the lack of sound transmission, which damage is irreversible, so it is doubly important that you have your hearing loss corrected as soon as possible.
Take Time To Become Accustomed To Hearing Aids
Imagine you had the volume of your TV set to 15% of the max volume. You likely have become accustomed to this volume, though it may be frustrating at times as you miss some of what is being said. Then, one day, the volume of your TV is cranked to 90% volume. It would be absolutely shocking to suddenly have it so loud!
This is essentially what hearing aids do for your hearing. So, while it is great to regain much of your ability to hear, becoming comfortable with your hearing aids is a process. Be sure to give yourself the time to become accustomed to hearing with your hearing aids rather just using them sporadically or giving up on hearing aids entirely.
