Living with hearing loss can be difficult, but with the right resources, you should be able to access the world of sound around you. Luckily, here in Las Vegas, there are many resources for the hard of hearing to utilize to make hearing easier.
Deaf Centers Of Nevada
A dedicated nonprofit, the Deaf Centers Of Nevada serve both the deaf and hard of hearing. They provide a variety of services, such as:
- Social Services advocacy support
- Communication access
- Activities and events for the deaf and hard of hearing
- Community Outreach
- Referrals for services
- Information on deafness and hearing loss
One of their centers is located right here in Las Vegas, so you can easily access their services if you need them, or if you just want to attend events and connect with others who struggle with their hearing.
Church Services With Interpreters
Struggling with hearing loss can leave some people feeling cut off from others in their worship communities. But, as the struggles of those living with deafness and hearing loss become more acknowledged, some churches are working towards making their services more accessible.
- Mountain View Church – Seventh-day Adventist
- Victory Missionary Baptist Church – Baptist
- New Hope Las Vegas Christian Fellowship – Foursquare
- Calvary Chapel Church – Non-Denominational
To find out what times the worship services will have interpreters and other hearing resources available, be sure to contact the church you are interested in, as this information is not often listed on their websites.
Also, if your church is not on this list, but you use hearing aids, you may want to ask if your church building is outfitted with a loop system. This system can be accessed with the telecoil setting found in many hearing aids, allowing you to tune your hearing aids into the speakers with greater clarity and cutting down on the echoes which are found in many worship halls.
Southern Nevada Centers Of Independent Living
Another group dedicating to helping those with disabilities is the Southern Nevada Centers Of Independent Living (SNCIL). As their mission is to help people retain their independence at home, in their communities, and at work, their services reflect this mission. For those who are hard of hearing, these services in particular may be helpful:
- Peer counseling
- Advocacy
- Adaptive equipment provision
- Information and referrals
