Our Hearing Aid Hero for this month’s is Adam Savage—of Mythbusters and Tested fame—and he has hearing loss.
Now, while some people may have assumed that his hearing loss is due to his work, Adam actually had a congenital disorder, leading to his conductive hearing loss. However, as we have all been able to see, Adam hasn’t allowed his hearing loss to hold him back from leading a full and exciting life.
Adam Savage and Hearing Loss
When someone has conductive hearing loss, that type of hearing loss is due to an issue in the outer or middle ear, which causes difficulty with sound conduction. Adam had his conductive hearing loss due to a birth defect, which is highly common with this type of hearing loss.

He had multiple surgeries on his left ear to repair issues with the bones as well as having the eardrum re-grown. While these surgeries did help Adam recover a good deal of his hearing, a bit over a decade ago, he found that he was still struggling to hear the people around him.

One of the major things that drove Adam’s hearing loss home was the fact that he couldn’t hear his wife very well. Hearing loss has the tendency to isolate those who suffer from untreated hearing loss, as it makes holding conversations and navigating our noisy world very difficult.
