Performing basic maintenance on your hearing aids is a great way to help them last longer and provide the best sound quality possible. So, to start, our hearing specialists here at Hearing Associates of Las Vegas wanted to walk you through how to change the filter on your hearing aids.
Why Change Hearing Aid Filters
Your hearing aids are tiny computers, and if there is something that computers don’t like, it’s is getting wet. Many people don’t consider how much moisture and earwax can build up in their ears, but these things can be very damaging to your hearing aids.
To protect the hearing aid receiver which is inserted into your ear, disposable filters are placed over the vulnerable opening. Also called wax guards, these hearing aid filters capture earwax before it can work its way into your hearing aids and damage the receiver.
It is important to change these filters out, as they will become compacted with earwax and the blockage will create sound distortions. How often they need changing will depend on how much earwax you naturally produce. However, if you want to be consistent, it would be a good idea to have your hearing aid filters swapped out once a month.
Change The Filter In Widex Hearing Aids
Widex hearing aids are some of the more popular hearing aids, so our hearing specialists wanted to specifically address how to change the wax filters on Widex hearing aids. There are two basic styles of Widex hearing aids, so depending on which style yours is most like is the tutorial you should follow to swap your filter out.
Also, if you are replacing your wax filters at home, be sure to buy Widex wax guards, which come with the replacement filter and the tool you need to remove and replace the old filter.

- Take the receiver cover off gently.
- Using the hook end of your Widex filter replacement, remove the old filter from the receiver.
- Clean the opening to ensure no wax remains.
- Turing the tool around, place the new filter in the receiver.
- Clean the receiver cover before replacing it over the new filter.
