Here at Hearing Associates of Las Vegas, our lead hearing instrument specialist and owner Robyn Lofton, knows firsthand what it is like to live with tinnitus. Robyn experienced tinnitus for years before finding a solution to manage her growing tinnitus symptoms.
Robyn’s Tinnitus
Robyn has been involved in the hearing care industry since her college days, so she was equipped to recognize what the phantom sounds of tinnitus were when she started to experience it. At first, Robyn was not overly troubled by the tinnitus.
“I have for years experienced tinnitus on and off. I would go months in between episodes,” Robyn said.
Like many people, Robyn noticed the tinnitus most often at night as she was attempting to go to sleep. Since her tinnitus was less intense at that time, she used a ceiling fan to generate white noise and drown out the tinnitus. Unfortunately the tinnitus began to occur more frequently and more pronounced. Robyn began to struggle with tinnitus daily as well as at night. Once that happened, Robyn knew she needed a more structured tinnitus treatment and she knew where to look for relief.
Using Widex Zen Therapy Hearing Aids
As an experienced hearing professional, Robyn was able to quickly determine that the best solution for her tinnitus was Widex Zen Therapy.
Embedded into Widex hearing aids, Widex Zen Therapy allows the user to manage their tinnitus via a smartphone app. Users can choose from a variety of sounds to generate soothing background noise which can substantially reduce the annoyance from the tinnitus.
“I have for several years seen the joy in my patients’ faces as we were able to successfully treat their tinnitus with Widex Zen” Robyn said “I knew the roadmap and what I needed to do to make the Widex Zen Therapy work for me and provide me with the comfort my patients’ experienced. I couldn’t wait to open [the Widex Zen] out of the box and begin using them. They have been amazing!”
Robyn’s Tinnitus Management Routine
While there is no cure for tinnitus, you can manage your tinnitus. While everyone experiences tinnitus a bit differently, you can implement Robyn’s tinnitus management routine and see if it helps you through your next flare-up.
Robyn said even with her Widex Zen Therapy hearing aids, she still has tinnitus flare-ups. “Different things can trigger it for me such as a bad night sleep, diet, stress, and certain over-the-counter medications.”
When these tinnitus flare-ups occur, Robyn said, “I have different programs to use based on how I am feeling. With the use of my iPhone, I am able to program so many different sound therapy tracks to listen to that help cancel out my tinnitus so that I don’t hear it. When I finish with the sound therapy, my tinnitus has reduced usually to a level where I don’t even notice it anymore.”
Robyn’s Tinnitus Today
Since using the Widex Zen Therapy, Robyn has enjoyed greater freedom from her tinnitus. She said, “Since using Widex Zen, I no longer feel like my tinnitus controls me but rather I control it.”
She is not completely tinnitus-free, as Widex Zen Therapy is not a cure, simply a management tool. However, when asked to rate her tinnitus on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the worst, Robyn said, “I would rate my tinnitus at a 2. I still have it, but most days I don’t even notice it anymore.”
For those who are experiencing tinnitus and don’t know what to do, Robyn said, “Tinnitus can be extremely frustrating and even debilitating at times if not dealt with promptly. The best way to get rid of our tinnitus is through habituation. Sound therapy such as the Widex Zen is a great tool to help through the habituation process. It is important that we don’t let our tinnitus control us but rather we control it.”
Robyn has recommended the Widex Zen Therapy for most levels of tinnitus severity. Even if you have severe tinnitus, Robyn said, “The Zen Therapy used in conjunction with Tinnitus Retraining Therapy can bring relief to even the most severe tinnitus cases.”
