If you ask someone who struggles with tinnitus what their tinnitus sounds like, the answer you receive may vary from person-to-person. Even a tinnitus specialist like those we have here at Hearing Associates of Las Vegas would tell you that tinnitus presents with different sounds.
This phenomenon is due to the fact that subjective tinnitus, the type where only the person deal with tinnitus can hear it, can be perceived differently by different people.
Different Perceptions Of Tinnitus
There are three different ways people perceive their tinnitus. This perception has to do with the quality of the sound but not the actual tinnitus sound.
- Musical – The rarest form of tinnitus perception is when it is heard as music or singing. Sometimes the tinnitus also manifests as the same tune on repeat.
- Pulsatile – This type of tinnitus perception comes in pulsing waves, often in time with the person’s pulse. Sometimes, this variety of tinnitus perception can be heard by others people, which can indicate a serious medical issue.
- Tonal – Most common of the tinnitus perceptions, tonal tinnitus is a continuous/nearly continuous sound which can overlap at times. These tonal tinnitus sounds have defined frequency ranges, though the volume of the tinnitus can increase or decrease without warning.
