This month, our hearing aid hero is a little different. Usually, we like to pick a person who has excelled in their field despite having to deal with hearing loss and using hearing aids, to help show that hearing loss doesn’t have to limit your ability to achieve.
But for February, we have chosen something, rather than someone as our hearing aid hero, namely, Joss Kendrick, a brand-new American Girl doll that openly wears hearing aids.
Meet American Girl Doll Joss Kendrick
American Girl has offered things like hearing aids and wheelchairs as accessories for their dolls prior to Joss. However, none of the stories of the American Girl dolls had hearing loss built into their story. For the fictional girl Joss Kendrick, her hearing loss is an integral part of her story.
Joss is a 10-year-old surfer girl who wants to try out for a spot on the competitive cheer squad. Her story is one of perseverance and not allowing her disability to hold her back from following her dreams and being physically active.
The Power Of Representation
What Joss can mean to other children is far more than a doll with a specialty toy. Instead, Joss allows little girls with hearing loss to see themselves represented and feel less alone.
The power of representation is part of why we here at Hearing Associates of Las Vegas highlight different hearing aid heroes. Sometimes, no matter how old we are, we all need a little inspiration to keep reaching for our dreams.
For some people, spending $98 on a doll with hearing aids may seem silly. But for a little girl who feels isolated from her peers and sees no examples of people like her succeeding, this American Girl doll can mean so much more.
Hearing Aids Don’t Have To Limit You
Above anything else, we hope to get across the message that hearing loss doesn’t have to limit you. Sometimes, we have patients who are worried that when they are diagnosed with hearing loss and need to use hearing aids that they will be limited from future opportunities.
While managing hearing loss can require you to take extra steps, such as find the hearing aids for your needs and practice good hearing techniques, living with hearing loss doesn’t have to hold you back!
If you are ready to have your hearing tested and tackle your hearing loss needs, then it’s time to contact us. We are ready to welcome you into our hearing family and help you enjoy the best hearing possible!
