Essential oils aren’t a new trend; they’ve been used for thousands of years for everything from congestion and healing to improving sleep and relaxation. Essential oils can be used topically or in aromatherapy, while others ingest certain oils for specific conditions.
This type of natural herbal treatment, while not for everyone, can be used for people of various ages and ailments. Essential oils have many uses, but a particular focus for a handful of oils is helping ear infections.
Essential Oils and Ear Infections
Ear infections can happen to anyone at any age, although it seems like a large majority of cases are seen in children (typical since their ear canals are smaller than those of adults). According to the European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, approximately fifty percent of acute ear infections within the middle ear are caused by a virus, which deems a “wait and see” period of a couple of days before diving into antibiotics.
While these few days can certainly not be pleasant, it begs the question – what essential oils help with hearing loss associated with an ear infection?
Which Essential Oils?
Research has noted that pain within the ear can be treated with herbal products such as essential oils, but knowing which oils to use can be challenging at times – especially once you’re in the throes of an ear infection!
While it’s easy to reach for apple cider vinegar or white vinegar for an earache (which has not been proven to improve ear infections), the underlying antibacterial properties of the vinegar certainly seem to help….and the case is the same for some essential oils.
Some of the most well-known essential oils for ear infections include garlic and tea tree oil, which appear to have antibacterial qualities. Helichrysum for hearing loss has also been used since this oil has anti-inflammatory properties.
Others you might come across include peppermint and oregano, which can also help relieve pain.
Before utilizing any essential oils, be sure that you speak with your physician. Not every case of ear infections and pain will be easily treated, and the ear infection’s location is also important.
Several essential oils are deemed “hot,” meaning they can cause burning and itching of the skin when not diluted properly. Carrier oils (used to dilute essential oils) are necessary, as is purchasing ones you know are legitimate and high-quality (mainly since the FDA does not regulate them).
Once you’ve researched and know the possible side effects (i.e., coughing, nausea, irritation/burning, fatigue), you can apply your essential oils if deemed necessary.
When to See a Doctor
Always speak to your doctor before using essential oils. Although some have beneficial health properties, they shouldn’t be the first thing to turn to before seeing your physician. In addition, more research will need to be done within the realm of ear infections and essential oils, so tread carefully and ensure the dilution of any oils before use.
